VARENNE'S CASTLE
9 Rue Victor Pétin
55000 HAIRONVILLE
ITINERAIRE

THE ESTATE: The design of the grounds as they stand today reflects principles in common use in the 19th century. There is a meadow dotted with thickets and encircled by more or less dense woodland. Here and there are trees that are remarkable for their size (purple beech, planes etc.) or rarity (Virginia tulip tree). There are two differing, but complementary, ways of looking at the park - either from the terrace behind the castle, which provides a general overview, or from the path running round the grounds, which provides a broken, but dynamic, view of the landscape. Stone benches have been set out like "resting places". Each of them gives a view of the castle, the river and the old bridge in Haironville. A path runs along the riverbank and round the park; other paths cut across the grounds. The grounds are listed in the Inventory of Parks & Gardens in France. It has also been a "Remarkable Garden" since 2004.

THE CASTLE: This elegant castle is a historic monument. It was built around an older fortified house in 1506 for Pierre Merlin, Commissioner of Accounts to the Duke of Bar. The architectural design is minimalist, with no ornamental carvings. Instead, it is the harmonious proportions and pure lines that are its most striking features. At all four corners of the main building are slender watchtowers with pepperpot roofs made of slate. The main hipped roof with tiles set out in a fish scale pattern is as tall as the building. The two wings added in 1574 flank the main courtyard, which is enclosed by a balustrade decorated with vases of stone flowers. The balustrade dates from the 18th century. The dovecote, a royal privilege, stands proudly adjacent to the house. It has 3,000 pigeonholes, an indication of the wealth of the owner. Inside the castle, in the hall, is an outstanding, and rare, Renaissance ceiling with carved stone coffering. Next to the hall is a huge staircase with an 18th-century wrought-iron handrail.
Open for groups only, with advance booking.
