Sampigny is a quiet little town in the Meuse Valley between Saint-Mihiel and Commercy (10 km), just 44 km from Verdun, 78 km from Metz and 64 km from Nancy.
Thierry and Hélène Verger welcome guests to their B&B, "La Maison de l’étang" set in landscaped grounds with trees, flowers and a private lake. There are 2 guestrooms (Gîtes de France – 3 ears of corn):
- Upstairs: The "Elodie" room is decorated in neutral colours. It is very spacious with a private lounge, 1 double bed, a TV and an en-suite. It also has an infrared sauna.
- Ground floor: The blue and white "Mélanie" room has direct access to the garden. It has 1 double bed, a TV and an en-suite.
A copious breakfast is served in a dining room or, in fine weather, beneath the pergola in the garden.
You can also enjoy a convivial table d'hôte dinner prepared by Hélène to showcase the flavours of Meuse through traditional recipes.
If you're a keen angler, you can enjoy your favourite sport (without a permit) in the lake on the property. If you prefer river fishing, the Meuse is just a few minutes from the B&B (you'll need a day permit).
If you like historic buildings, you'll enjoy President Raymond Poincaré's summer residence and its magnificent gardens in Sampigny. Also worth a visit is Commercy with its castle that was home to King Stanislas of Poland and its delicious madeleine sponge cakes. Then there is Saint-Mihiel, home to some particularly fine works by Renaissance sculptor Ligier Richier.
A visit to Verdun is a "must" during your stay. See the citadel and World Centre for Peace, or take a cruise on the Meuse. On the battlefield, see the Douaumont Ossuary, Fort Vaux and Fort Douaumont, the destroyed villages, the Verdun Mémorial Museum, the Trench of Bayonets etc.
Walkers will enjoy the "Wind in the Forests" Trail where works of art are set up in clearings, surprising and charming those who see them. It's total immersion in the forest environment and, again, something not to be missed!
