A visit to Vent des forêts exhibition

In the heart of Meuse, deep in the countryside between Bar-le-Duc and Verdun is a forest dotted with works of art made of wood, stone or iron. It is the Vent des forêts association that is behind this lively, outdoor exhibition. Every year for almost the past 20 years, it has invited a dozen artists from many different countries to come and take a new look at nature. For a fortnight, the artists live with the local people in six small country villages on the edge of the forest : Fresnes-au-Mont, Ville-devant-Belrain, Lahaymeix, Dompcevrin, Pierrefitte-sur-Aire and Nicey-sur-Aire.

Immersed in rural life and the natural environment in the heart of Meuse, the artists erect temporary or permanent works that blend into the forest, assisted by a large number of volunteers and local artisans who are only too willing to lend their barns or their tools, donate materials, help with transport etc.

The creation or upkeep of the works of art brings people together and shapes the history of this unusual forest and its natural environment, which constantly changes with the seasons, the rain, the snow, the sun or local forestry work. Exposed to the weather and the passage of time, the works eventually become an integral part of the natural environment, colonised by insects and overgrown with moss.

Vent des Forêts has produced almost 200 works of art over an area of 5,000 hectares, beside 45 kilometres of signposted footpath divided into 7 walking or cycling trails. All along the trails, you’ll suddenly come across a work of art in a clearing or on the edge of a cornfield or right in the middle of an orchard. These modern art trails are located within areas shared by local people, farmers, hunters, the French forestry commission etc. They are accessible at all times to walkers, hikers or anybody with a love of art.

Vent des Forêts receives almost 25,000 visitors every year – families, walking groups, school, art lovers, tourists from Holland and Belgium etc.

The trails are open all year but visitors are advised to avoid the hunting season, between September and March.

New works are unveiled every year in July but visitors also return to see their favourite works again and see how they have blended into the natural environment. The works exhibited as part of the Vent des Forêts are audacious and a source of both amazement and adventure, worth seeing and worth listening to. In fact, they’re the stuff dreams are made of.

See you soon on the trails filled with the sound of the wind in the trees.
