Travel through various periods in French history :
From the Treaty of Verdun in 843 A.D. during the reign of Emperor Charlemagne to the epic tale of Joan of Arc which began in Vaucouleurs, from the arrest of Louis XVI in Varennes-en-Argonne to the Great War that left its mark on the countryside of Meuse and the history of Europe, the many guided tours, and entertaining, interactive visits provided by local guides provide an emotional look at several chapters in our history.
They take you on a journey through time, in places that bear witness to the history of our “county” such as the remains of the Gallo-Roman town of Nasium, the rich architectural heritage of the Renaissance district in Bar-le-Duc (the capital of the Duchy of Bar and Lorraine), aspects of the Spanish Renaissance in the town of Marville, Vauban fortifications at the impressive citadel in Montmédy, the summer residence of King Stanislas, Louis XV’s father-in-law, in Commercy etc.
The history of Meuse is first and foremost the history of people who were commited to a cause.
Brave people who had vision. People with a moving story to tell. People with a history worth sharing.
