Located between Verdun and Commercy is the small town known as "Lorraine's Little Florence", Saint-Mihiel. Push open the wrought-iron gate, take a deep breath and - you're on holiday! Marie-Noëlle Sellen gives guests a friendly welcome to La Paliole, a gîte set in lush, peaceful grounds, 33 ares of land dotted with trees that is part of the 12th-century estate which once belonged to the Dukes of Bar.
This holiday let has been tastefully renovated by the owners who have subtly combined the architecture with antique and modern furniture to offer all the comfort required by a family of four. The interior comprises an entrance, a well-equipped open-plan kitchen, a lounge with flat screen TV, DVD player, Internet connection and a large Lorraine armoire containing games for all ages.
Next comes the parents' bedroom, " La Lanterne", which has a queen-size bed made on arrival. Up a few steps is the children's bedroom, "Le poulailler", with its twin beds also made on arrival.
This house is the ideal starting point from which to see the town's historic buildings, Ligier Richier's sculptures, the Saint-Mihiel Salient and the Meuse Hills. Also not far away is Lake Madine which offers a range of activities. What with the natural environment and cultural visits, there's plenty to keep you and your family busy!
