EGLISE SAINT-ETIENNE IN SAINT-MIHIEL

55300 SAINT-MIHIEL

This church, with its intensely-coloured windows, houses one of Ligier Richier’s major works, “Le Sépulcre” (the Tomb). This portrayal of the entombment has recently been restored, and is rightly recognised as one of the peaks of the 16th century sculpture from Lorraine. The group of 13 figures, larger than life, in fine-grained Meuse limestone, is the sculptor’s last-known piece in France.
