A territory with wide open spaces, a third of which are covered in forest, the Meuse is made for hiking. It boasts over 4,500 km of protected tracks, 800 km of which are signposted. This network of tracks is accessible to all, hikers and countryside enthusiasts. Two Grande Randonnée footpaths run through the Meuse: the GR 14 and the GR 714, an 800-km network of regional paths and four themed tracks accessible on foot, horseback or mountain bike.
LE VENT DES FORÊTS (Wind in the forests)
Since 1997, six woodland villages have been hosting international artists on summer residencies. The fruits of these visits, over 130 works, have been created along 45 kilometres of specially-signposted and footpaths, freely accessible from March to September. Enriched by the encounter of the artists' personal approaches with our rural wooded setting, the works of the Vent des Forêts will punctuate your path with moments of charm, surprise, pleasure or wondering. Conference-trail, subject to booking.
THE MIRABELLE TRAIL
Covering 77 km, this trail enables you to set out on horseback or mountain bike on an exploration of the Côtes de Meuse and the Hauts de Meuse regions. On the agenda: a superb panorama of the medieval village of Hattonchâtel and over the Meuse valley. You will pass through vineyards and orchards, and visit the cellars of our wine producers. You'll explore the wooded massif of the Hauts de Meuse, the chalky lawns of Génicourt sur Meuse and be treated to sweeping views over the Woëvre plain.
Duration: 2 days - accommodation available in a trekking lodge or hotel.
JOAN OF ARC TRAIL
Created in 1995, the Circuit Jeanne d'Arc, open to trekkers of all types, provides 80 km of tracks brimming with history. Here you will find the house where Joan of Arc was born, the Bermont chapel where she used to come to gather her thoughts, Montigny-lès-Vaucouleurs where she bought her horse, Vouthon, the village where her mother Isabelle Romée was born, and of course Vaucouleurs, "the town that armed Joan of Arc".
Duration: 2 days - accommodation available in a trekking lodge or hotel.
THE SAINT-MIHIEL SALIENT TRAIL
An essential strategic zone from 1914 to 1918, the Saint-Mihiel salient still bears the scars of the terrible fighting that took place here over 4 years. The Bois d'Ailly, the Bois Brûlé (burnt wood) and Tranchée de la Soif (trench of thirst) bear witness to the suffering endured by the soldiers.
A visit to the extraordinary site of the Bavarois and Roffignac trenches, whose layouts remain intact after 90 years, is sufficient to relive the daily lives of the soldiers in the two camps.
Duration: 1 day
The 800 kilometres of marked tracks that await you - whether along the GR 14 (red and white markers), the GR 714 (red and white markers), the GR 703 (red and white markers), or the GR des Pays (regional major trails, with red and yellow markers), provide plenty of chances and opportunities to explore the Meuse region, its forests, its unobtrusive monuments... and just as many chances of surprising a deer in the corner of the woods, seeing a kestrel hunting for food, catching sight of a fox looking for shelter... but there's also the certainty that come the evening you'll find a welcoming restaurant and a comfortable room.
THE LIGIER RICHIER ROUTE, Renaissance sculptor (by car)
It was in the Meuse, at Saint-Mihiel, that one of the 16th century's most remarkable sculptors was born: Ligier Richier. His invaluable works can still be seen in Saint-Mihiel, Bar-le-Duc, Clermont-en Argone, Etain, Génicourt-sur-Meuse and Hattonchâtel. The Ligier Richier Route provides the opportunity to travel around the Meuse, with the theme of the most beautiful Lorraine Renaissance sculptures.
THE ROUTE DE LA BIERE
An itinerary comprising all the sites related to the theme, beer producers and suppliers offering beer-based products as well as producers of Meuse specialities.
