Natura 2000 is a European network incorporating a group of natural sites identified for the scarcity or fragility of their wild animals and plants species and of their habitats. This ecological network comprises Special Conservation Zones (SCZ) and Special Protection Zones (SPZ). Each zone is validated by the European commission according to Directives for birds and/or Habitats. Nowadays there are 25 sites in the Meuse registered in the Natura 2000 zone, 8 of which are classed as SPZ (Birds). The sites Natura 2000 zones feature in over 56,740 hectares of our departement, 40% of which are agricultural zones.
Some of the Meuse Natura 2000 sites:
- the Madine lake, - the Lachaussée lake, - the Pagny-sur-Meuse marshlands, - the Méholle valley forests, - the Argonnelles forests, - the Beaulieu en Argonne national forest, - the Dieulet forests...
